What is a machine-readable file?
Since 2021, federal price-transparency rules have required every US hospital to publish a machine-readable file of its standard charges: the list price, the cash price, and the rates it negotiates with each insurer, for every service it bills. The files are public, but they are large, their formats vary from vendor to vendor, and hospitals do not always make them easy to find. What can you do with it?
You can compare what your hospital charges cash payers against what it charges insurers, check a bill against the hospital's own posted prices, or research prices across a whole region.
